Life As A Chapter Book

The metaphor of a chapter book works well in describing a human life.  In talk therapy we describe the struggles that a person is going through as a chapter in that book not the whole story and this is a book you get to change the cover of as often as you like.

And so as we come and go from a person’s life, we need to be mindful we know only the chapter that our paths cross in.

Years ago in a senior’s home, there was the nicest elderly man, he always had a pleasant word for staff, knew our children's names and was helpful towards the people he shared the home with.

So why was it his only son never came to visit?  Holidays would come and go money to purchase gifts for his father arrived but no visits.

Finally, it become too much and the director of the home called the son and encouraged him to visit his father.  With the application of guilt, the son relented and the day of the visit arrived.

He walked through the front door of the home and went directly to the office of the directer where he announced that this would not go well.

What did he mean not go well, staff smiled and told him how pleased his father would be do know he was a grandfather, how his father always paid special attention to the children who visited, not go well his father would be thrilled.

We only knew this elderly man through one chapter in his life book and with horror moments later profanity, and curses erupted from his room as he screamed after the retreating bodies of his son, daughter-in-law and grandchild.

As the son passed the nurses he said "My father is a bigot and has never accepted my wife or my son, it is my father’s wish never to see us again not ours!"

This quote took on new meaning to the entire staff that day.

Be mindful always that each of us has many chapters in our life book, some we are proud of, others we are not and some we strive to conceal.

God made you alive!

From the dais rang words of condemnation and retribution!

From the pulpit words of hell fire and brimstone rained down on our young heads!

We were:
            Dammed to hell,
                        Born out of sin,
                                    Forgotten by God,
                                                Destined for eternal torment,

Unless we repented that very moment!

Falling on our knees and

praying that our Lord forgive us our sinful nature!

Well you bet we all got up off our chairs, and ran to the front crying for forgiveness - we ran out of fear of a God that was going to strike us down that very minute because we were not like the blessed, whoever they were.

Then when there was no holy fire, no lighting, no sudden assentation either to heaven or to hell, we were left confused, embarrassed and angry.  We had been tricked.

This experience as a child visiting in a distant relative’s church, left us filled with concern, worry and mortal fear.

Instead of finding a faith that lifted us up, that called us to sit at Christ’s feet in love and encouragement, we were left crying in our bedrooms overwhelmed by rules, and religious dogma.

This memory was brought to consciousness in today’s service where we were reminded that Christ walks with us each day in love through the people we will meet.

That we are the works of God’s own hand and thus we always walk within God’s love and mercy, sinner and saved alike.

As an adolescent it was only when I understood that God loved my uniqueness that my spiritual desire to follow and serve in love was born.

When I understood  that it was not my sameness with others or my blind following of religious dogmas  that was desired of me that a faith based fear melted and I knew the unconditional love of my God.

I was made alive by my God, created with unique gifts and abilities, with the potential to love and give back as I meet Christ daily in the face of a crying child, the worry of an elderly woman, in the request for help from a homeless youth.

It is not about the rules and dogma it is about love,  every child knows this.

Ham and Cauliflower Casserole

Leftovers what to do with them?
Put them in the freezer and too soon they are taking over, and that is something Grandpa Snyder just cannot tolerate.

Thus the inspiration for today's recipe.

In our freezer was ham from Easter, shredded cheddar cheese and chopped scapes, while in the refrigerator was a head of cauliflower and from the pantry we pulled out mushroom pieces and mushroom soup.

Now we stood in the kitchen looking at our ingredients and decided the flavours went together, that nothing shouted DON’T USE ME!  Sometimes meals just happen this way.

Here is Ham and Cauliflower Casserole and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Ingredients
Scapes
  • 4 cup cubed cooked ham
  • 1/3 cup chopped green onions or scapes (garlic plant tops)
  • 1 small head of cauliflower broken into bite size pieces
  • 1 Can of mushroom pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 11/4 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Directions
  1. Mix the first 6 ingredients and pour into a 9 x 12 baking dish
  2. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes at 350 F.

Don't deprive me my age!

She enters the building standing tall, walking with pride of place, she walks with the assistance of bright red walker.

Her 80+ years of living, farming, running after children and a nasty fall a few years ago have left her legs and back in need of support.  She is thankful for the support and she keeps her red walker always at hand.

As she moves through our group she stops and talks to friends and praises young children. When a conversation goes on longer than expected she turns her walker around and sits down, not wanting miss out on the coming and goings of her friends.

She has earned every wrinkle, some brought on by years of smiling and laughing, some from spending too much time in the sun gardening, farming, playing with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, while other are from worry for her family and extended family.

Just as she earned each ache in her body over the years she has gardened, walked, played with children, stood for hours canning, has bent over quilts and a rug weaving loom for hours and she has spent many hours her knees praying.

She is alive and engaged in her own life.

She takes advantage of the privileges age allots her and continues to build memories that carry her into the future.

She is old and has earned every day of her life.

She continues to live, she is happy and takes advantage of the days that are remaining to her.

She is not denying her own age.

She is embracing it!

Stop now and look at how you spend your time, your days, are you embracing your age?

Or like many unhappy midlifers and seniors are you denying the years you have lived and working hard to stop the inevitable?

The Mystery… has now been revealed

Lord who shall be with you in heaven?
They that, work for justice, speak the truth from their hearts, do not speak badly of others or gossip, who have peaceful relationships with their neighbours, who given of their wealth without a thought to repayment, those who do not exploit the poor and homeless for personal benefit and gain, and finally those who are injured, spoken badly of and continue to love.  Psalm 15

When our actions are grounded in love, compassion and service to others, and we live in the sure knowledge that in this moment we are rich beyond our wildest dreams, we are living an abundant life in our Lord.

We are living within the mystery of God’s unconditional love.

When we know that all our earthly belongings count as nothing in the vastness of eternity and we hold the assurances of God to reconcile all unto him, we live in balance and abundance with the world around us.
And the mystery of God is revealed
~ Love ~
Love is the most delicate of emotions.
Love is the strongest of ties motivating unto death for the other.

Teach Me

“But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it” Deuteronomy 30:14
If we take the time to watch, really watch, the wisdom we might glean from the meek in our society, the children, the poor, disenfranchised, homeless, and aged.

What might we learn?

What can they teach us?

They teach us about the impermanence of ownership, the corruption of waste, the despair of isolation, the need of friendship and the desire to be seen.

They have learned to give all they have to their neighbour because it is theirs to give and when they in turn have need, they trust – no – they know that their neighbour will share will the in turn.

They live near to God.

So look with eyes to see and a mind open to learning from these the meek in our society.
Learn from them how to give and receive in love.
How to find joy, companionship and worth that is separate from what we own,  what we consume, separate from the identities we have created for ourselves.

And the meek will he teach his way.

Blueberry Crumb

We love blueberries!

Whether we have to drive to Northern Ontario to pick our own or travel to our local farmer’s market blueberries are our go to fruit.

And blueberry season is now upon us.

Today’s recipe started out as fresh blueberry pie however the heat and humidity had different plans and when we went to serve the dessert it was runny.

What to do! What to do!

It was then that we remembered Aunt Elsie once turning a runny fruit pie upside down into a large glass bowl stirring and serving what she called a Crumb.  Please note this only works if your pie shell is made with graham cracker crumbs or other cookie crumbs.

So with no hesitation upside down went the pie and Blueberry Crumb came out.

Emily our granddaughter arrived the other night wanted to know if we had anymore blueberry crumb left, so it was a success.
Ingredients:
  • 2 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (we use gluten free)
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • ¾ cup of butter or none dairy butter substitute melted
  • 5 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup Clear Jel

Directions:
  1. Mix graham crumbs and the 3 Tbsp. sugar into the melted butter and mix well.
  2. Press this mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 9-inch dish
  3. Mash 2 ½ cups of fresh blueberries (we used our food processor for this)
  4. Combined sugar and Clear Jel mixing well add this to the mashed berries stirring.
  5. Spread this over the crumb crust
  6. Spread the remaining fresh berries over this and lightly press into the mashed berries
  7. Place in the refrigerator for at least an hour
  8. Remove and serve.
  9. Now here you have a choice.  If the clear gel as set up and you are able to cut into squares you can serve the dish as blueberry squares and if you want crumb take a large spoon and without over stirring mix the crust into the berries leaving large pieces of crumb.

The Kingdom of God has come near you

A young man plays the piano during the prelude to the service.  With each note he plays the burdens both known and unknown to me fall away.  In the final notes I am free to open myself up to know my Lord, for through his music I  know that the Kingdom of God has come near to me.

We do not have to do great acts of self sacrifice, or labour long hours in the service of others, we only need to act out every moment of our lives in love to illuminate the Kingdom of God here on earth.

The small child sitting behind me sings out loudly and off key, coping the words we sing a split second later.  My spirit cries out to his Grandparent’s “Please let him sing!” for he sings with abandon and pure joy and again I know the Kingdom of God has come near to me.

We have been commissioned to live lives of peace, love and service.  When we do this we work for the good of all, lifting the burdens that prevent us from knowing the Kingdom of God.

Your smile as you walk down the street, your joy at being alive will lift the burdens of people unknown, so they may know the Kingdom of God draws near to them.

Gluten Free Corn Dogs

Grandma do you know how to make corn dogs!

  • 1 cup gluten free cornmeal
  • 2/3 cup almond milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon mustard

Directions:
  1. Mix all your ingredients together well except for the hot dogs
  2. Roll out the batter using extra cornmeal to keep it from sticking to your surface
  3. Cup into squares and roll around the hot dog alternatively using your hands form the batter around the hot dog
  4. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes or until they start to brown

Who is my neighbour?

How often have we called out to Lord:
  • Save me
  • Help me
  • Rescue me
  • Take this from me
  • Keep me safe
  • Not me Lord please!

These are cries of selfishness of human free and helplessness.  Where the scriptures today challenge Christian's to call out to the Lord in faith and service:
  • Open me to see where I must risk in saving someone else
  • Show me where my help is needed
  • Give me courage where I may rescue others
  • Give me the other’s pain so they do not have to suffer
  • Put me in harms way so I can keep another safe
  • Me Lord use me!

We do not live isolated, safe, protected, lives.  We live connected to each other where all human destiny is interwoven, we are all neighbours when we show mercy and kindness – when we live our lives through our Lord’s love and kindness.

Depression

Depression walks beside each of us everyday,
it is part of the human condition and some days no matter what you or others do we takes its hand, we become traveling companions.

On days such as these knowing that it will pass and that tomorrow will bring hope, opportunity and choice gets us through today.

When depression becomes a constant travelling partner again it is this knowledge of tomorrow that provides the courage to ask for help.

Because we are not mentally ill,

we are human and depression walks beside each of us everyday and we can let go of its hand and travel tomorrows free of its influence!
