A Brief History

Cherries were first introduced to North America by colonists who brought saplings with them when they immigrated to the New World.  Sour cherries thrived in the Great Lakes area of North America where they did well in the humid, moderate climate.

Traverse City, Michigan claims to be the Cherry Capital of the world according to Wikipedia and they host a National Cherry Festival http://www.cherryfestival.org/  this festival will be held July 5 -12, 2014.
I would encourage you to visit this website and go to the Cherry Recipe Box, there are some very interesting recipes there like Cherry Chili, yep that is right Cherry Chili.  Paul and I will try it and provide both the recipe and a review in a future post.

Traverse City is 617.49 kilometers or a 7 hour drive from Kitchener Ontario.  It will make for a nice long weekend road trip in 2014.
Canada is a small participant in the sour cherry marketplace.  Canada produces wonderful sour cherries and this year was a bumper crop.  Even so we import over ¾ of the sour cherries consumed in Canada from the USA.

This year Paul and our son Eric went to Jim and Ruth Martin farm and picked sour cherries from the abundance of their orchard.   Emily and Ruth then help Grandma make
Sour Cherry Oatmeal

Cook cherries with 1/2 the cherry juice and all of the white sugar.
Combine the cornstarch with the remaining cherry juice mix well (there should be no lump of cornstarch) once the cooked cherries are boiling add the cornstarch mixture and stir until thickened and clear - set aside to cool.

No need to worry the stove was turned on after all of the ingredients were added
Crust - blend together the flour, oatmeal, brown sugar and baking soda and once thoroughly mixed together stir in the melted butter and mix with a fork.

Press 2/3rds of the crust crumble into the bottom of an 8x8 baking dish.

Add the cooked cherry filling and crumble the rest of the crust on the top.

Bake at 350 F for 35 minutes

and with Ice cream it only last 30 minuted to disappear.
