Family Day 2014

Family Day 2014

children roller skating

Family Day is observed on the third Monday of February in Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.  Here in Ontario Dalton McGuinty legislated Family Day to be a provincial holiday on October 12, 2007, thus making Family Day the 9th statutory holiday in Ontario.

Roller Skating

The first recorded appearance of roller skating according to Wikipedia was in 1743 where they were used in a London stage performance and these skate have to wheels set much like today's roller blades.

The first four wheeled roller skate appears in 1863, the addition of two more wheels was to make turning easier.  The toe stop was added in 1876 and steel ball bearing were added to the wheels in 1884.  The roller skates that you see being used by our granddaughters and by roller skaters today have remained basically unchanged from those in 1884.
After just 30 minutes see how much better
the girls are doing.

This is the second year that we have gone roller skating with our granddaughters and their parents.  The Neustadt Lions Club rent the Neustadt arena and host a free roller skating event for local families, this include the use of the roller skates.

And a last year following our roller skating adventure we all went to the Redwood Restaurant for pie and ice cream.
