Driving to work, only half listening to CBC on the radio when I
was pulled back into the moment by this statement – everyone needs to stake a
claim for their life.
As a 60+ woman looking at retirement I knew immediately that
this is the task ahead of me.
I don’t
have to remake myself for retirement nor do I have to live my life accepting
whatever comes my way until I pass from this life to the next. I need to stake my claim and live in as full and meaningful a
life a possible.
As I look to those around me for examples of people who have
staked claims to living our grandson was the first example. He has staked a claim for his right to live
and he does it daily through his art, he shares art, his creative energy with all those
around him bring joy into his world.
A girlfriend staked her claim to life as she refuses to abandon her claim in the
face of cancer, she bring joy into the world around.
And I found examples of people who made no claim for life.
Elderly relatives who stopped going out and made the choice to
narrow their existence to their home, TV and family who would come to
visit and yes they had to watch TV as they visited.
Young people who work and go home
with no expectations from life, family or themselves – wanting just to be left
alone.
Joy is what is scarified by just existing within your life.
Joy is the reward of claiming your life, personal joy and being the source of joy for others.
I will stake a claim and stop worrying about what might become
of me.
I will be me! I know
how to do that.
I will stake my claim and live through joy.
