Myrtle Beach January 31, 2019 - Camden Revolutionary War Site

Cotton

Cold again this morning and what does Grandpa do he decides to clean the trailer windows and while he was doing this I planned a road trip where we stayed warm and took advantage of the amazing sunshine.

We was our first road trip of this vacation.

Camden was the random destination that we decided on and with a packed picnic lunch off we went.  We travelled past numerous cotton fields that appeared to our untrained eyes to be unharvested and the fields held standing water, it is very wet this year.

We were thrilled to learn that Camden is a revolutionary war site a place that we will return too as we toured just one of the many historical places in Camden.

The house in the background is the McCaa House the home of
Dr. John McCaa 1793-1859.

We were able to tour the Cunningham House 1835 and the Craven house both housed small museums of interesting items from the home and era.

This is an authentic bread oven that would have been used during the Revolutionary period.

The stockade you must have a place of punishment.

The 1777 power magazine was built and this is a replica that shows the 48 in. thick walls.

These two images are of one of the two Redoubt that the British built during the war.   A redoubt is a temporary fortification from which there is no flank defenses – one way in and one way out.

We were not able to tour the Kershaw house because they were setting up for the February 1-3 event A Treaty of Ghent Celebration Weekend the tent that you see is one of at least 10 tents we saw that will house the 1815 market.  If it wasn’t a 2 ½ hour drive we would go back tomorrow afternoon when the Market opens to the public.

We ended our day with a ½ price banana split.
